How Thinking About Death Makes Us Happier…

“A conversation with death is the quickest path to seeing what you value most in life. Understanding what you value most in life means you will have an intuitive understanding of the best ways to spend your time, energy, and attention.” – Dr. Kashey

At first, the concept of visiting with “death” seems rather morbid. But similar to stoic philosophy, there are present day cultures that practice placing death at the forefront of their mind each and every day. When you think about the reality of death, it gives you a very clear perspective on how you want to live your life. Insignificant things fall away. Priorities become your focus. As Ephesians 5:15-16 says, you’ll live wisely and make the most of every opportunity—and beyond that, you won’t take things for granted. You’ll savor them. This is not just theory. There’s research supporting it. We aren’t just more effective when we live with an accurate perspective on death… our happiness actually improves!

So how can we do this amidst the busyness of life? If you just think about the reality of death for a few minutes each morning (or before going to bed at night) and reflect on ways you would behave differently if it was your last day, it can help you focus how you want your behaviors to align with living life on purpose and with purpose the following day. Doing this honestly will change the way you use your time. It will change the way you respond to people. This isn’t about fear. This is about focus.

As a believer, we know that ultimately Christ was victorious over death and so are we, but we allow it to win if we don’t live each day and rebellion against it. “Death is winning. Do something.” – Dr. Kashey.
