Carbs Are Not the Enemy!

Last week I had someone involved in my medical treatment care plan tell me to “watch how many carbs you eat.” It was well-meaning advice related to some temporary side effects of beginning new medication.

Thankfully I know better and I trust the coach managing my macro and training plan, otherwise I may have been tempted to listen. But I know many people would immediately tailspin after hearing this thinking that it was sound advice.

But here’s the thing, as my body adjusts to new medications, it needs stability—especially stability with nutrition. Slashing my carbs to try to mitigate what will likely only be temporary side effects is not the answer!

Additionally, if I make adjustments to multiple things at once, how am I going to know which thing my body is responding to?

Now, I don’t want to discredit the place of medical experts. As a medical provider myself, I know how frustrating it is to have patients who are not compliant. That said, this person was giving me nutrition advice without knowing anything about my current intake and was not the one most suited to do so.

My purpose for sharing the experience is not intended to be an attack on what took place, rather to use it as an example of how important it is to assess the advice you are given. It’s important to get to a place where we rely on both experts and our own understanding of what’s taking place so our emotions don’t throw us off from implementing the plan.

Thankfully I have TKN to keep me grounded… So yes, I’ll “watch my carb intake” as I eat and then plug in my current numbers daily 😂
