#75Hard Day38: Willpower Tips & Strategies
▶️ Whether we are undertaking a big goal or working on behavior change, self-discipline and self-mastery are required to succeed. Willpower is a necessity for achieving both.
▶️ While our true source of strength comes from the Lord, willpower is a type of strength in the form of a tool that we can use to our advantage.
▶️ Willpower is like a battery in that it will be situationally exhausted (it depletes over time).
▶️ Willpower is also like a muscle in that we are born with a genetic predisposition and some people are naturally more gifted at it. However, that does not mean we can’t strengthen it. Putting it under tension depletes in the short term, but strengthens it over time.
▶️ How can we decrease burden on draining willpower and how can we strengthen it:
🧲 Replace bad habits with good habits. (Odysseus vs Argonauts story). Create a compelling draw from good habits which overcomes any allure of the bad.
🙏🏼 Prayer. Has been shown to buffer the drain on willpower. Draw strength in the Lord instead of self.
🏠 Edit your environment for success. Set yourself up to make the right choice. Things like keeping your temptation foods out of the house and reserving them for when you are out at a special occasion, stocking your fridge and pantry with heathy foods, or having your workout clothes ready.
🧘🏻♀️ Meditation. Strengthens our resolve by helping to train the brain to focus. You can practice traditional emptying of mind or meditate on scripture as well.
🍽 Balance blood sugar. Eliminate spikes and drops which cause you to make poor decisions. Eat balanced carbs and avoid eating high glycemic ones in the absence of protein and fiber which can buffer the effects.
🔄 Create habits. Being on autopilot with healthy habits eliminates making decisions and the drain on willpower. Streamline whenever possible!
🛏 Get adequate sleep. Lack of sleep is a stressor which automatically creates a heavier load on you battery.
🎯 Decrease multitasking. This constant switching exhausts willpower. Do one thing at a time and stay on target until it’s done before moving on.
🗺 Have bright line rules. Create if-than scenarios for yourself of courses of action. You don’t have to decide in the moment but just rely on the plan you’ve mapped out.
🛀🏻 Practice self-care. Do things that recharge your battery on a regular basis so that it does not get drained as quickly.
💪🏼 Practice a small willpower strengthening activity each day. Something very small early in the day like making your bed, getting up the first time the alarm goes off, drinking a bottle of water before your coffee, etc.
🏋🏻♀️Exercise. This form of self discipline translates to other areas.
