Perfection is not realistic. None of us need to be judging ourselves based on whether we hit the mark 100% of the time.We think that being “perfectly disciplined” or going as hard as we can after something is the best route toward success. The truth is that when practicing healthy habits, consistency is what sets you up for success. Perfection is setting yourself up for failure, because all or nothing usually ends up being nothing.
The best strategy I have surrounding this mindset shift is “never miss twice.” This is a concept I got from James Clear. The idea is that you haven’t “fallen off the wagon” if you miss once. If you miss twice, that sets you up for losing traction on your habit. So, if you miss once, just get right back to it the next day. With that practice in place, you’ve still succeeded at consistent implementation of your habit!
I love what James clear has stated about this process; that even if you miss every other day, you still accomplish the activity 50% of the time. While the idea is definitely to implement an action more than 50% of the time, 50% is still pretty good when you’re looking at it from the perspective of implementing an activity that is not yet a habit!
Again, the idea here is to establish a habit by implementing a behavior consistency. What matters more than perfection is consistency and completion because as the number of reps adds up, the behavior gets stronger and stronger, and eventually becomes a habit.
A lot of these things which are required for lasting change are things which I call #SuccessStrategies. They can be boiled down to habits, mindset shifts, and psychological strategies—in addition to involving the Lord in the process of course!
