The Difference Between Good Coaching & Great Coaching + Work With Me!

To me, coaching is nothing more than the ability to walk someone else through a set of circumstances which I have successfully navigated before. It’s a lot like discipleship. You point out the possible pitfalls. You shed insight on how to more efficiently navigate the obstacles. You lead the person to a deeper understanding of themself and the circumstances they face. Everyone is different. You can’t just give people rules to follow. Not only because the rules will change depending on the context (which has the potential to leave someone even more confused), but more importantly, because rules box people in, rather than encouraging growth outside of conventional parameters. Good coaching helps people achieve short term progress, but usually doesn’t teach skills to continue progressing further, typically resulting in rebound. The best kind of coaching will elevate someone to the extent that they will eventually outgrow their need for it at the current level and sets them up for sustained success.

The difference in a good coach and a great one is that a great coach moves beyond strictly providing information to teaching the skillful application of principles. Instead of more information, you give people principles which they can use to work on habits. You show them how their circumstances are actually equipping them with tools to refine them and pull them to the next level version of themself. You can’t push somebody into that place, and that’s what I feel rules do—shove them in an attempt to achieve. Instead, you must lead them; call it out of them; encourage them that change is possible. You get people to attach deeper meaning to their goals by finding a way to solidify their values and then connecting them to their identity. From there it is practice, pivot, rinse, and repeat until the new habit replaces the old.

What do you want to achieve? Who do you want to become? How do you want to serve others? You may not know how to get there, or even how to get started. Let’s start now by working on your habits.
